Photonic Integrated Circuits (PICs): Microelectronic systems that integrate optical functions onto a single chip and use light for signal processing and data transmission. They enable high bandwidths, low energy losses, and significant miniaturization. For applications such as optical transceivers, sensor technology, quantum technologies, or photonic computing, photonic and electronic components must be tightly integrated. At Fraunhofer IZM, suitable fabrication, interconnection, and packaging technologies are being developed to simultaneously meet electrical, thermal, and optical requirements.
